Feature
Definitions and Notes
- Disk Space
Disk Space is the total of all disk space your account uses on our system except for web
log files. Configuration files, email, and web documents all count. Our quotas are
generous, but strictly enforced. Your disk usage is measured at a number of random times
per day. The highest measurement (even if it's just one out of 100) is used to bill you.
Going over your allotted space costs $1/MB/mo.
for each MB over limit at the month's peak measurement.
- Traffic
Traffic is the total of all the bytes that our servers pump out on behalf of your site.
This includes incoming and outgoing email if we choose to measure it. Our
stated quotas are expressed in gigabytes per month. (gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes) For
billing, this is measured at the end of each billing period. Anything over quota will be
charged at $8/GB (in whole GB blocks).
- Virtual Domain
Having a virtual domain means your site is published at http://hostname/, versus something
more like http://www-personal.ntdcommunications.com/~user/. hostname could be in .com
(i.e. schmoop.com), .net, .org, or under almost any country's domain (schmoop.co.uk). For
international domains you will have to do a little more work than with the generic three,
but it's essentially the same process. The new domains .biz and .info work jost like the
other generic ones &em; acquire your domain from any registrar and give them our nameserver
information. NTD only hosts virtual domains. If you don't want
to get anything else, you can get a domain like id.x.ntdcommunications.com -- you
pick any id still availible.
- Unrestricted FTP Access
Every domain has at least one FTP login with full access to the site. You can use this
account any time of day or night, any day of the year, and make all the updates you want,
free.
- Telnet Access
Most of our accounts have one login with telnet access. This lets you log on to our Unix
servers and use the full Unix development environment. (Ssh is the preferred method for
'telnet' access, if you can do it.)
- Standard CGI
All NTD accounts can use some basic CGI tools that we have installed -- like counters and
WWW->email gateways.
- Custom CGI
Most of our accounts have the ability to upload and run their own CGI programs. These can
be things you find on the web or write yourself. C and Perl are well supported.
- PHP3
PHP is a programming language designed for the web. It has some great features: it is
written right into the web page, making it easy to start using; it runs in the web server,
making it 20x or more faster than CGI; it has powerful but easy database connections,
making database-enabled sites the work of minutes. We currently support version 3 of this
language.
- MS FrontPage Support
Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Extensions (which work with any version of FrontPage except 1.0)
are availible on request to qualified
accounts at no charge. These are the Unix extensions -- all features except for
database connections work. You will still have full FTP access to your account with the
extensions installed. However, note that the extensions do not mix with custom CGI
programming.
- Unlimited Email Aliases
With your virtual domain you can create any number of email addresses, any time you want.
All you have to do is uplead a text file to the server describing what you want done with
each address and it takes effect instantly. You can even specify what happens to email
sent to an address not on your list.
- Unlimited Email Autoresponders
You can upload any number of text files you wish to a special directory. Email sent to a
corresponding name will be automatically answered with that file. You can also have a copy
of the email forwarded to you, letting you collect the addresses of those requesting
information or check their email for questions.
- Email forwarding
Any of the unlimited email aliases you create can be forwarded anywhere on the Internet.
- Number of Mailboxes
Aliases control the addresses that people can email. Mailboxes are the distinct points
where the email can go. You can have multiple mailboxes to keep different people's email
seperate.
- Unlimited Mailboxes
An option for our business-class accounts gives you the ability to create
unlimited mailboxes
in your domain. Rather than request and wait for the addition of a
mailbox, then giving your user a POP3 account name like schmoo13, you
can create mail accounts yourself, any time of day, and give them any
name you want. You can handle your users'
forgotten passwords yourself, too. Plus, these accounts can be
accessed by POP3, IMAP4, or web mail (http://mail.schmoop.com/).
- Mailing Lists
Many of our accounts allow you to create and manage majordomo-run mailing lists. You can
create as many lists as you like, without even bothering us! Nobody else offers this
as far as we know.
- SSL Secure Site
Accounts with the option to create a secure site will get some space published as https://ssl1.ntdcommunications.com/~login/.
(The ssl1 may vary.) You can use this space to collect and provide information that is
invulnerable to network sniffing, such as order status, credit card information, or
personal files.
- MySQL
MySQL is a popular RDBMS with some design tradeoffs that make it suited for many web
applications. Accounts with this feature get one database on our MySQL server.
- Priority Tech Support
NTD Communications strives to answer all customer questions quickly and accurately. In
general we work on problems in the order in which we are notified of them. Clients with
priority tech support, however, will be moved ahead of clients without. Also, if we do
get a little behind, the elevation procedure (pagers going off, etc.) kicks in sooner
for priority support requests.
- Server
Most of our accounts are hosted on shared servers. The whole web hosting industry is built
on the fact that a non-descript server can run hundreds of web sites without any problems.
We do offer an option for those who need their own server dedicated to their site(s). This
means nothing more than that the hardware is reserved for your sites and nobody else's for
the duration of your time here. It is neither a lease nor a way for you to administer the
machine yourself.
